Jersey Shore Day Trips from Union County

Union County is the ideal location for easy Jersey Shore day trips in less than an hour.  If you are looking for a quick beach getaway without the hassle of a long drive, here are three of my favorite Jersey Shore towns for a day trip.  Each has its own distinct vibe; from relaxing and quaint to lively and music-filled.

Jersey Shore Day Trip destination: Avon-by-the-sea, NJ

Avon-by-the-sea, NJ

Ocean Grove & Avon

If you’re in the mood for a classic beach day, it doesn’t get better than Ocean Grove and Avon-by-the-Sea. These neighboring towns are known for their peaceful beaches, historic charm, and slower pace—ideal for families or anyone craving a more laid-back atmosphere.

  • Ocean Grove is famous for its Victorian architecture, quiet boardwalk, and small downtown filled with boutiques, bakeries, and ice cream shops. It’s a great spot to take a stroll and soak in the charm.
Avon-by-the-Sea offers a similarly serene vibe, with a well-maintained beachfront, bathrooms, a snack bar, and free street parking.

Jersey Shore Day Trip destination: The Sandbox at Seastreak Beach in Highlands, NJ

The Sandbox at Seastreak Beach in Highlands, NJ

Highlands

This spot is less about pristine sand and more about the laid-back beach bar scene. One of my favorite summer hangs is The Sandbox at Seastreak—a beachfront venue with live music, food trucks, and cocktails, plus a beach where the kids can swim while the grownups unwind.

The atmosphere is casual and fun, with an unbeatable view of the Manhattan skyline. It’s perfect for those evenings when you want to catch a sunset, sip something cold, and enjoy a live band with your toes in the sand.

Jersey Shore Day Trip destination: Asbury Park, NJ

SeaHearNow Music Festival in Asbury Park, NJ

Asbury Park

If you want a livelier beach day with plenty of dining, music, and shopping, Asbury Park delivers on all fronts. This iconic Jersey Shore destination blends boardwalk fun with a buzzing arts and music scene.

You can shop local boutiques inside the historic Convention Hall, grab a great meal on the boardwalk or Cookman Avenue, and cap off the night with a show at the legendary Stone Pony. It’s a great mix of beach and entertainment that’s perfect for couples, groups, or music lovers.
